Someone alert Guy Fieri. The Red Cadillac may not be a drive-in restaurant, but patrons will feel like they’ve never left their cars while dining at this Mexican eatery. The Union hotspot, known for its tacos and tequilas, was opened in September 2010 by veteran husband-and-wife restaurateurs Joe and Jamey Montes. Less than 3 miles down Morris Avenue from AVE Union, the restaurant is hard to miss with its 1968 chili-red convertible Cadillac parked out front – and on its sign. Automotive touches aren’t limited to its entrance. The cozy eatery is reminiscent of your neighborhood mechanic’s shop with hubcaps and red bulbs strategically placed throughout, a wreath made of green glass beer bottles hung above the bar and servers dressed in retro gas station attendants’ shirts. The Montes’ dub the fare, which is homemade, “classic Mexican street.” Favorite dishes include the Sizzling Cadillac Fajitas served with rice, Cadillac beans, tortillas, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo and the enchiladas, soft corn tortillas with your choice of chicken or beef, Monterey Jack, cheddar and Chihuahua cheeses. But it’s not just the food that creates its loyal clientele. The Montes family has been infusing tequila with fresh fruit for three generations. Twelve unique flavors, ranging from PB & Jelly to Red Hots, can be used in making margaritas, but Joe recommends you drink them straight up.
